We slipped one past the kid and went on a date.

Seems every time my husband and I plan to go on a date, Mateo gets sick or something happens to ruin it. Every single time, it seems. We were going to have a date some Saturdays ago, and my husband took the Friday off before the Saturday date just for the heck of it. Of course, towards the end of the day, he got a call from daycare saying Mateo woke up from his nap and threw up everywhere. Date night cancelled. Then we planned to take MLK off, take the boy to daycare, and have a day-date: movie and lunch. But my husband was entirely too busy at work right then, so I suggested we just go to work and scrap the date and do it another time. For the sake of his sanity, he agreed.

I suggested last Thursday that we plan another day-date and ask for a day off. My husband picked yesterday, Monday, and so we both got Monday off.

But here's the thing: We hardly talked about Monday before Monday happened, especially when Mateo was around. Because I seriously think that kid gets things, and he's all, "Oh hell to the no, you're not going to run off and have fun without me!" and then promptly barfs or gets a high fever or some odd rash.

Yes, we hardly talked about it, in fact, I think we only talked about what movie we were going to see and at what theatre (Slumdog Millionaire - great movie - go see it). And low and behold, when Monday rolled around, Mateo was quite well, nary a sneeze or sniffle, and off he went to daycare while we got to hang out with the 50 and older crowd at the theatre because apparently we either like to watch movies that the senior citizen set likes to see or we go on days and at times only seniors citizens would go to the movies. Besides some preteen on a date with his mom and his grandma, we were the youngest people there, by far.

I even had to show some lady in the bathroom how to get the air blower to work so she could dry her hands. I shimmied up to her, slowly moved my hand under one, it turned on, and she said gleefuly, "OH! Thank you!" I then went to another one and worked my magic so I could dry my own hands.

We had a lovely, non-rushed feeling date. We got to snarf down popcorn with jalapenos, then go across the street to a local brewery where we shared salad and pizza and drank beer out of a glass. How I miss drinking beer out of a glass. I do realize I can pour a beer into a glass at home, but it's just not the same thing at all as going somewhere and drinking a pint of freshly poured beer.

And we got half-heartedly carded. Nothing better than that.

That sounds like so much fun! Even with the older crowd. Better than being in a theater full of teenagers :)
